WINEMAKERS’ NOTES

This wine displays hallmark Pinot characteristics, floral and berry compote.  Pressed straight to French barrel after a 5-day cold soak. An authoritative tannin structure, finely integrated oak and grounding acidity. Featuring a 100% wild ferment, the structured finish is long and abundant in spice.

“There is a beautiful silver lining to the storms we go through, especially when we weather them together. The world breaks us all - at some point, in some way. Some of us become stronger where we were once wounded. Maybe that is the point.” Brianna Weist

WINEMAKERS’ NOTES

This 2017 single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc was machine harvested from a vineyard down the Waihopai valley in Marlborough.  25% of this wine went through a wild ferment and 100% went through natural malolactic fermentation. 15% of this wine was barrel aged and then bottle aged.

2017 Vintage details

In honesty, one of the hardest vintages. The conditions in lead u to harvest looked promising, vines were healthy, yields down slightly compared to the 2016 season. But rain, and cooler conditions made for a later season, so the Sauvignon in particular was a little more restrained but produced a wonderfully distinct acid line. Although challenging, the conditions favoured our barrel ferment winemaking style.

2017 Reviews

Complex, ripe and pure fruit scented bouquet. Aromas of fresh white peach and preserved lemon, fresh tropical fruits of pineapple and green mango then apple and fresh herbs. On the palate - textured, fruity, varietal and spicy. Flavours reflect the nose with a spicy acid tang, wet stone mineralogy and lengthy salivating and lightly salty finish. Well made and ready to drink upon purchase and through to 2023." 94 points.

Cameron Douglas MS

"A gorgeous alternative-style; the complex bouquet shows baked apple, gun smoke, grapefruit

and lime peel aromas with a hint of oatmeal. It's concentrated and weighty on the palate, delivering lovely roundness backed by firm acidity, finishing impressively long and expansive. At its best now to 2023. 93 pts. 5 stars.

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

A wine with a conscious, not many of those around! This Sauvignon Blanc has a certified (by CarbonClick) 200% carbon offset, meaning instead of being a drain on the world’s resources, they are adding to them. Fermented with a combination of wild and inoculated yeast strains, 15% of the wine was aged in barrel and then held back in bottle before release, a truly unique wine.

Yesssssss, a well-made sauvignon blanc with a little age can be such a treat, and this one is perfect! Stunning tropical notes on the nose, passionfruit with touches of fresh lychee, citrus and handfuls of freshly picked white flowers, then as the wine opens up a slight greenness creeps in adding to the complexity. The textural palate has weight, but the flavours remain vibrant, grapefruit, lemon, and apple with a big splash of acidity and crunchy minerals on the finish. Drink on its own or with crayfish, oysters, or mussels.

Angie Atkinson, The Wine Writer

The 2017 vintage (4.5*) is a single-vineyard wine, grown in the Waihopai Valley and partly (15 per cent) barrel-aged. Maturing gracefully, it is a light yellow/green, mouthfilling wine, with vigorous, ripe, tropical fruit flavours, gently seasoned with oak, and a crisp, dry, lingering finish. 4.5 Stars.

WINEMAKERS’ NOTES

A beautiful synergy has formed between fruit and secondary characters that mainly stems from the 2019 drought, low yields, and smaller than usual berries. A complete wild ferment combined with intricate and luxurious tannin structure reveals this to be a wine to be taken seriously. Made for my old man.

This Pinot has been crafted to age. I recommend putting it away for now and drinking up to 2035.

2019 Vintage details

2019 is regarded as one of the driest lowest yielding vintages Marlborough has seen. The growing season started off well, with a relatively wet spring providing good growth but pretty poor flowering which has meant the berries and bunches of the Pinot were smaller than average. The Pinot's delivered intense colour and flavour is a reflection of a very dry season.

WINEMAKERS’ NOTES

We think  the best wines are produced when kaitiakitanga is expressed purely and our job is to harness this natural expression. Capturing the natural personality of its surroundings without too much interference is what we strive for vintage upon vintage. Grapes are carefully crushed and unclarified juice is sent to French barrel to begin a wild fermentation. The two barrels were innoculated with our signature yeast blend. Post ferment this wine was held on lees and went through a natural malolactic ferment. Other than lees stirring at controlled cellar temperatures between 13 to 16°C this little gem has had very little winemaking intervention allowing the vintage to tell its own story. Single vineyard
